Reliever Vargas stays with Brewers

MILWAUKEE (AP)—Reliever Claudio Vargas(notes) agreed Friday to a one-year contract tostay with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 31-year-old right-hander went a combined 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA in 36relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee last season whileholding opponents to a .177 batting average. He did not allow a run in his final13 appearances.

Vargas began the season on the disabled list with tendinitis in his rightelbow, then was activated July 3 and went 0-0 with a 1.64 ERA in eightappearances before his July 31 trade. Vargas went 1-0 with a 1.78 ERA in 28games with the Brewers.

Milwaukee also agreed to minor league contracts with right-hander KameronLoe(notes) and catcher Matt Treanor(notes).

Loe, 28, has a 19-23 record with a 4.77 ERA in five major league seasons andspent last season with Fukuoka of Japan’s Pacific League. Treanor was 0 for 13in four games for Detroit last season. He did not play after April 23 because ofa torn labrum on the right side that required surgery. He wife is MistyMay-Treanor, an Olympic gold medalist in beach volleyball.
