Red Sox 3B Lowell on DL with hip strain

BALTIMORE (AP)—Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell(notes) was placed on the15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right hip.
Lowell had fluid drained from his hip Monday in Boston, and received aninjection designed to the surgically repaired joint.
The move is retroactive to June 28; Lowell had played in only two ofBoston’s last nine games and returned to Boston following Sunday night’s game inAtlanta. The 35-year-old is batting .282 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs.
The Red Sox filled the void by recalling first baseman/outfielder JeffBailey(notes) from Triple-A Pawtucket. Bailey played earlier this season with Boston,batting .188 with three homers and nine RBIs in 23 games before being optionedto Pawtucket on May 31.
