Huff’s bases-loaded walk lifts Giants

WASHINGTON (AP)—Taken out of the starting lineup, slumping Aubrey Huff(notes)drew a bases-loaded walk as a pinch hitter to force home the go-ahead run, andthe San Francisco Giants overcame Jonathan Sanchez’s(notes) wild start and BrianWilson’s(notes) wild finish to edge the punchless Washington Nationals 2-1 Saturday.

Sanchez walked or hit seven of Washington’s first 10 batters but allowedjust two hits and one unearned run in his five innings. Guillermo Mota(notes) (2-0)pitched a perfect sixth for the win, and four other relievers followed withhitless work.

Still, Wilson made it interesting in the ninth. He walked two batters andhit Jayson Werth(notes) to load the bases with two outs, before striking out AdamLaRoche(notes) swinging for his eighth save.

John Lannan(notes) (2-3) allowed two runs in 6 2-3 innings.

He gave up Eli Whiteside’s(notes) homer in the third and the bases-full walk toHuff in the seventh.

Both teams learned before the game that they would be without their starthird basemen for long stretches because of upcoming operations: San Francisco’sPablo Sandoval(notes) is expected to miss four to six weeks because of a broken bone inhis right wrist; Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman(notes) should be sidelined for six weekswith an abdominal tear.

The lineups could have used those players’ skills at the plate.

The Nationals, in particular, really let Sanchez and Wilson get out oftrouble despite some serious control problems. Washington left the bases loadedin each of the first two innings, before doing it again in the ninth.

Sanchez walked three of the game’s first four batters—Rick Ankiel’s(notes)double-play grounder was the exception—prompting a mound visit by Giantspitching coach Dave Righetti. That didn’t help, because Sanchez then issued afourth free pass.

But with the bases full, Michael Morse(notes) swung at the first pitch and groundedout to third.

Things didn’t get better in the second, which Sanchez began by hitting IanDesmond(notes) with a pitch.

The left-hander then had Desmond picked off first base with a well-disguisedmove. When Desmond broke for second, fill-in first baseman Buster Posey(notes)—normally a catcher, he was making his first start at the bag since August, togive the .202-hitting Huff a rest—threw over, but shortstop Mike Fontenot(notes)dropped the ball and was charged with an error.

A wild pitch, walk and another hit batter helped load the bases. Ankiel thenhit a floater than ticked off diving Fontenot’s glove for a run-scoring singlethat made it 1-0 and left three runners on.

But Sanchez managed to wriggle out of the jam. He struck out Jayson Werthlooking, then got Adam LaRoche to ground out to Posey.

That began a stretch of eight consecutive outs for Sanchez, including fourstrikeouts in a row.

After Whiteside’s first homer of 2011 tied the game, the Giants went aheadin the seventh. Miguel Tejada(notes) reached on an infield single, Fontenot hit aground-rule double, and Whiteside was intentionally walked.

That brought up Huff, and Lannan’s day ended with the walk that made it 2-1,a score that wouldn’t change.

Lannan ran Posey down and tagged him out, then threw to shortstopDesmond covering second to tag out Burrell as he tried to take an extra base.

Rangers hit 3 HRs in rout of Athletics

Michael Young(notes) hit his first homer of the season as the Rangers tagged A’sstarter Brett Anderson(notes) (2-2) for seven runs in five innings while snapping atwo-game losing streak.

Lewis (2-3) allowed six hits with a season-high six strikeouts to win forthe first time since April 2. The right-hander had lost his previous threestarts while getting one run or fewer of support.

Kurt Suzuki(notes) and Josh Willingham(notes) homered for Oakland, which failed in itsattempt to get above .500 for only the second time this season.

Texas regained sole possession of first place in the AL West. The Rangersheld it for a week until losing to the A’s on Friday and dropping into a tiewith Anaheim. The Angels lost to Tampa Bay earlier Saturday, however, allowingthe Rangers to move back on top of the division alone.

A day after getting 11 hits—all singles—Texas had five extra-base hitsoff five Oakland pitchers and finished with 14 hits overall, one shy of itsseason-high. Every starter except Mitch Moreland(notes) had at least one hit and sevenplayers had at least one RBI.

Young’s homer was especially nice for the Rangers. His two-run shot in thethird ended a power drought that extended back to last Sept. 25.

Before muscling up against Anderson, Young had managed to drive in 17 runswithout a home run—the third-most by a player in the bigs since 1946.

The Rangers tagged Anderson for an early run in the first, getting some helpfrom Oakland’s shaky defense which entered the day second in the majors inerrors.

Anderson issued a one-out walk to Elvis Andrus(notes), then got Young to hit agrounder to second. But Andy LaRoche(notes), who was originally penciled in at thirdbefore second baseman Mark Ellis(notes) was a late scratch, threw to first instead oftrying for the double play. Andrus then stole third and easily scored on AdrianBeltre’s(notes) double that left fielder Willingham made a casual attempt to field.

Lewis, who appeared in 26 games for the A’s in 2007, relaxed with the leadand cruised to the win. He retired 15 of the final 18 batters he faced followingWillingham’s homer in the fourth and didn’t walk anyone until the eighth.

It was Lewis’ longest outing since a complete-game win over Houston lastJune 19.

Joyce opened the 10th with a double off Fernando Rodney(notes) (0-1). After BenZobrist(notes) lined out and Casey Kotchman(notes) moved Joyce to third with a grounder,Rodney threw a 1-2 pitch into the dirt well off the plate that eluded catcherHank Conger(notes).

“Hank did all he could,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “That wouldhave been an incredible stop.”

Rays manager Joe Maddon gave credit to Kotchman for advancing the runner andthe lead Joyce got on third before the wild pitch.

“Especially with a guy like Rodney. He’s going to throw some balls in thedirt,” Maddon said.

The Rays, at 15-12, are the first team to finish April with a winning recordafter opening the season with a six-game losing streak.

Tampa Bay’s James Shields(notes) took a shutout into the ninth before giving up adouble to Torii Hunter(notes) to open the inning. Kyle Farnsworth(notes) came in and Hunterlater scored to tie it at 1 on Howie Kendrick’s(notes) grounder.

Farnsworth had converted all five of his previous save opportunities thisseason. The right-hander was OK after taking Vernon Wells’(notes) grounder in the ninthoff his shin.

Joyce also homered for the Rays, who have won six of seven. Joel Peralta(notes)(1-0) struck out two during a perfect 10th.

Angels right-hander Joel Pineiro(notes) gave up one run and four hits over seveninnings in his first start this year. He started the regular season on the15-day disabled list due to right shoulder tightness.

Shields allowed one run, six hits, one walk and tied a career-high with 12strikeouts in eight-plus innings. He had a stretch of 21 scoreless innings end.

“Outstanding, once again,” Maddon said.

Shields was coming off consecutive four-hit victories over Toronto and theChicago White Sox. The pair of wins, in which the right-hander allowed just onerun, followed a stretch of nine straight winless starts, dating back to lastyear.

Joyce made it 1-0 on his homer leading off the fifth. He had a three-runshot, his first home run of the season, in Friday night’s 8-5 loss to theAngels.

Shields was perfect through one out in the fifth when Kendrick singled toleft. The Angels then loaded the bases on singles by Erick Aybar(notes) and Conger, butShields recovered to strike out Peter Bourjos(notes) and Alexi Amarista(notes).

“Both guys were matching each other pitch by pitch,” Scioscia said. “Wehad some opportunties in the fifth. Just couldn’t get a hit to change the courseof that game.”

Kendrick went 2 for 4 and has 49 hits in 108 at-bats overall against TampaBay.

Pineiro retired eight in a row to begin the game before Reid Brignac’s(notes)third-inning single.

Francona said before Saturday’s game against the Mariners that theright-hander tested well in medical exams and it may have just been an off day.

Indians’ Hafner dealing with foot injury

Hafner got hurt sliding into home plate to score on Wednesday night. He tookbatting practice the next day and was in the starting lineup, but scratched withwhat the team said at the time was inflammation in his right ankle.

A visit to Dr. Brian Donley at Cleveland Clinic along with an MRI examshowed the injury was to the bottom of Hafner’s foot.

Hafner, hitting .342 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 21 games, will beexamined again on Monday. Manager Manny Acta said he considers the DH availableif needed.

Mets starter Jonathon Niese(notes) (2-3) took the loss after Placido Polanco’s(notes)sacrifice fly in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie.

Niese escaped jams in the fifth and sixth before John Mayberry(notes) Jr. tied itin the seventh with his first homer of the year. Wilson Valdez(notes) then singled toright field and Dane Sardinha(notes) drew a walk.

Halladay struck out after his bunt attempt was called foul by the home plateumpire. Shane Victorino(notes) singled to right to chase load the bases and chaseNiese.

Polanco followed with a sacrifice fly to right to break the tie.

A stellar play by second baseman Daniel Murphy(notes) on a hard grounder by JimmyRollins(notes) ended inning. Murphy dove to his right and flipped the ball to shortstopReyes—although replays showed Victorino beat the play.

Niese pitched 6 1-3 innings allowing two runs and six hits. He struck outthree and walked two. At one point he retired 11 straight batters after givingup a one-out double to the second batter of the game, Polanco.

It was New York’s third straight loss after winning six in a row.

The Mets left-hander ran into trouble in the fifth when he hit Ben Francisco(notes)to start the frame and then gave up a single to Mayberry Jr. Niese then gotWilson Valdez to hit into a double-play and later retired Halladay on a pop outto Murphy to end the inning.

The Phillies threatened again in the sixth on consecutive one-out singles byPolanco and Rollins. Philadelphia slugger Ryan Howard(notes) then flew out toright-center field, allowing Polanco to advance to third. Niese escaped theinning when first baseman Ike Davis(notes) chased Francisco’s foul ball after a longrun and made an over-the shoulder catch.

The Mets got to the Philadelphia ace in the fourth on three straight hits.Murphy singled to right and David Wright(notes) reached on an infield hit to third.Carlos Beltran’s(notes) single to center scored Murphy. Halladay escaped withoutfurther damage.

Nationals 3B Zimmerman to miss 6 weeks

WASHINGTON (AP)—Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman(notes) needs surgery for atorn abdominal muscle and is expected to miss six weeks.

The team says Zimmerman will have surgery Tuesday. He originally went on the15-day disabled list April 12 with what the Nationals said at the time was astrained abdominal muscle. Zimmerman got a second opinion from a doctor inPhiladelphia on Friday.

Zimmerman is hitting .357 with a triple, homer and four RBIs in eight gamesthis season.

The Braves will forward results of their inquiry to commissioner Bud Selig.

“We are still working on it,” Wren said.

The team placed McDowell on administrative leave Friday, a day after heapologized in a statement.

Wren says any punishment will be coordinated with Major League Baseball. Hesaid Friday he hoped the team’s investigation would be complete this weekend.

Minor league pitching coordinator Dave Wallace is filling in for McDowell.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he missed “the rapport” with McDowell butnoted Wallace is a capable fill-in.

“What do pilots have, stick hours?” asked Gonzalez on Saturday.“(Wallace) has got unbelievable pitching coach hours, and he and Roger are onthe same page.”

The allegations against McDowell came from Justin Quinn, who said he was inthe stands with his wife and 9-year-old twin daughters before the April 23 gameat San Francisco when he noticed McDowell ask three men “Are you guys a homocouple or a threesome?”

Quinn said McDowell made crude sexual gestures with his hips and a bat.Quinn said he shouted, “Hey there are kids out here.” According to Quinn,McDowell said kids don’t belong at a baseball park, picked up a bat, walked upto Quinn and asked him, “How much are your teeth worth?”

Sandoval out 4-6 weeks with wrist injury

WASHINGTON (AP)—San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval(notes) has abroken bone in his right wrist and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner says an MRI exam Saturdaymorning revealed the broken hamate bone. Sandoval probably will have surgeryTuesday.

Groeschner says Sandoval was in pain while batting during the World Serieschampions’ 3-0 loss at the Washington Nationals on Friday night and had anX-ray.

Sandoval is hitting .313 with five homers and 14 RBIs this season. ManagerBruce Bochy calls Sandoval’s injury “a tough blow for us.”
