Hunter, Mathis help Angels top Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Torii Hunter(notes) and Jeff Mathis(notes) homered, helping JeredWeaver(notes) and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Thursday in achilly season opener.

Weaver allowed two harmless singles to Melky Cabrera(notes) over 6 1-3 innings,improving to 3-0 in his last four starts against Kansas City. The 2010 majorleague strikeout leader fanned six and walked two as the Angels won their openerfor the seventh time in the last eight years.

Hunter and Mathis, on his 28th birthday, hit solo shots off Luke Hochevar(notes),who pitched 5 2-3 innings and gave up four runs in his first opening-day start.

Kansas City had a chance to go in front in the eighth and ninth, but theAngels got out of it both times.

Mike Aviles’(notes) leadoff drive off Kevin Jepsen(notes) trimmed Los Angeles’ lead to 4-2in the eighth. The Royals went on to load the bases on three walks, but MichaelKohn(notes), the Angels’ fifth pitcher, struck out Jeff Francoeur(notes) and retired AlcidesEscobar(notes) on a fly ball to end the inning.

With runners at the corners and two out in the ninth, Alex Gordon(notes) barelymissed a home run before Fernando Rodney(notes) struck him out for the save. Gordon was0 for 5 with three strikeouts and left five runners.

Weaver (1-0) had faced the minimum until Cabrera flared a single into leftwith one out in the fourth. The right-hander, the Angels’ pitcher of the yearthe past two seasons, then retired six of the next seven, allowing only onewalk, before Cabrera singled up the middle with two out in the sixth.

Hunter, on a 3-2 pitch, cranked a 446-foot shot over the center-field fenceleading off the fourth. It was his 27th homer against the Royals, the most he’shit off any club. Vernon Wells(notes) and Erick Aybar(notes) followed with back-to-backdoubles.

The Royals committed three errors. After Mathis homered in the sixth, PeterBourjos(notes) bunted and wound up at third on throwing errors by Hochevar and secondbaseman Chris Getz(notes). Maicer Izturis(notes) ended up driving him in with a single.

Hisanori Takahashi(notes) replaced Weaver and allowed Francoeur’s two-out drive inthe seventh.

Third baseman Aviles was booed when he ran toward the left-field dugoutchasing a high pop off the bat of Bobby Abreu(notes) but let it fall in. It was calleda no-play, but boos echoed again when Abreu then singled with two out in thefifth. But Aviles made a nice play on Wells’ grounder to end the inning.

Hochevar (0-1) also allowed nine hits, struck out five and walked none. Oneof the runs on his line was unearned.

NOTES: Royals relievers have switched sides. Since Kauffman Stadium openedin 1973, the home team bullpen had always been behind right field, the visitors’behind left. A-Rod nearly earns more than Royals

The Kansas City Royals are barely making more than Alex Rodriguez(notes) this year.

The salaries for Kansas City’s 27 players on its opening-day roster anddisabled list total $36.1 million, according to an analysis of major leaguecontracts by The Associated Press.

A-Rod alone makes $32 million atop the New York Yankees’ $201.7 millionpayroll. He is baseball’s highest-paid player for the 11th straight year.

Overall, baseball salaries were nearly flat this year. The average of the844 players on opening-day rosters and disabled lists was about $3.3 million, upjust 0.2 percent from last year. The increase was the lowest since a 2.7 percentdrop in 2004.

Robinson was scheduled for an outpatient procedure at Greater BaltimoreMedical Center on Thursday, but on Wednesday night he became ill. In astatement, Robinson says doctors chose to admit him early “to aggressivelytreat the infection.”

He says he is “responding well to antibiotics.”

The 73-year-old Robinson did not provide details of his illness and hasasked for privacy in the matter. He says he looks “forward to a fullrecovery.”

Robinson, who was treated for prostate cancer in 2009, says he remainscancer-free. He played for the Baltimore Orioles from 1955-77 and was elected tothe Hall of Fame in 1983.

The Brewers became the first team in 42 years to open the season withback-to-back homers when Rickie Weeks(notes) and Carlos Gomez(notes) connected off EdinsonVolquez(notes). Ryan Braun(notes) also had a solo shot, helping Milwaukee take a 6-3 lead tothe ninth.

That’s when the Reds reverted to their winning ways of 2010. Their first sixwins last season came in their final at-bat, tying the major league record.Hernandez connected off closer John Axford(notes) (0-1).

The Reds trailed 6-3 when Axford—who set a Milwaukee rookie record with 24saves last season—let it get away. Cincinnati loaded the bases with none out,but Axford fanned Jay Bruce(notes) and got Jonny Gomes(notes) to hit a sacrifice fly to deepcenter.

Hernandez hit an opposite-field homer into the Brewers’ bullpen, setting offanother hopping home-plate celebration like so many last season. The Reds tiedfor second-most wins in their final at-bat while taking the NL Central title.

The Brewers have designs on overtaking the NL Central champions afterchanging managers—Ron Roenicke took over for Ken Macha—and adding ZackGreinke(notes) and Shaun Marcum(notes) to their rotation. One game in, they’re one gamebehind.

The 41-degree first pitch made for the second-coldest opener in GreatAmerican Ball Park’s nine-year history, prompting the 42,398 fans to bundle incoats and blankets. Volquez warmed up wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.

Then, the Brewers got off to the majors’ most sizzling start in decades.

Weeks extended his spring tear with his 22nd career leadoff homer. He ledthe Brewers with a .442 average and one homer during spring training. Faststarts are no surprise for him—Weeks hit a club-record eight leadoff homerslast season.

When Gomez homered into the upper deck two pitches later, the Brewers becamethe first team in the majors to start a season with a pair of homers sinceCincinnati’s Pete Rose—who watched from a seat behind home plate on Thursday—and Bobby Tolan connected off Don Drysdale in 1969. Drysdale didn’t allowanother run in that one, winning 3-2.

Drew Stubbs(notes) and National League MVP Joey Votto(notes) hit solo homers, but the Redswent to their final at-bat before Hernandez ended it with his three-run shot,his fourth hit of the game.

Selig wants to ban smokeless tobacco

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Commissioner Bud Selig says Major League Baseball wantsto ban smokeless tobacco in the majors.

In a letter to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, Selig told the group’spresident that he believes “smokeless tobacco should be banned at the MajorLeague level.”

In order to make that happen, the owners have to negotiate with the players’union and have the ban added to the next collective bargaining agreement.

Smokeless tobacco, including dip and chew, is banned in minor leagueballparks.

Union chief Michael Weiner said in February that he expected the subject tobe broached in the upcoming talks.

Newcomers Russell Martin(notes) and Rafael Soriano(notes) did their part as the Yankeesgot off to a quick start on a gray, blustery, 42-degree day.

Granderson made two spectacular catches against his former team and homeredfor the third straight opener—off a lefty, no less. He connected againstformer Yankee Phil Coke(notes) (0-1) as New York embarked on its first full seasonwithout George Steinbrenner as owner since 1973.

With the flags above the lights in right field whipping toward the foulpole, Teixeira connected off Verlander in the third inning. Normally a .235hitter in the first month of the season, the first baseman didn’t get his firsthit last season until his fifth game.

Slimmed down by 25 pounds and healthy after having surgery on his right kneethis winter, Sabathia gave up six hits and three runs—two earned. Starting onopening day in each of his three seasons with New York, Sabathia (1-0) struckout seven and walked two.

Joba Chamberlain(notes), Soriano and Rivera pitched perfect innings and the Yankeesretired the last 10 overall.

Verlander was making his fourth straight opening day start, most for theTigers since Jack Morris went 10 in a row (1980-90). He was hoping to get off toa quick start to his season after going 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA last year in Aprilbefore finishing 18-9, and he altered his offseason workout to help accomplishthat.

Pitching in shirt sleeves, the right-hander reached 97 mph on the radar gunin the first, but walked Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez(notes) before striking outRobinson Cano(notes) with his 31st pitch of the inning.

Verlander gave up just two other hits, including Rodriguez’s one-out doublein the sixth that hit the fence in right-center just above the 385-foot marker.He walked Cano, but struck out Nick Swisher(notes) and Jorge Posada(notes) with two deceptivechangeups, one 85 mph, the other 86.

Jhonny Peralta(notes) drove in his first run of the month. After going without anRBI in 66 spring at-bats, he hit a sacrifice fly to center in his first plateappearance to give Detroit the lead in the second inning.

Miguel Cabrera(notes) lined a single to left and, in his first at-bat with Detroit,Victor Martinez(notes) hit a hot shot to shortstop that Jeter, making a half-dive tohis left couldn’t corral, for a base hit. Sabathia walked the bases loadedbefore Peralta flied to Granderson.

Detroit closed it to 3-2 on Brandon Inge’s(notes) two-out single in the fourth, andtied it on Cabrera’s sacrifice fly in the fifth with help from Cano’s error onWill Rhymes’(notes) sacrifice attempt. Covering first, Cano closed his glove beforeTeixeira’s toss arrived and the ball fell to the field.

Swisher had an RBI single in the eighth.

Granderson right away tested the injured side that kept him out of actionsince March 22, diving to make a catch on Rhymes’ sinking liner in the first.Granderson came up smiling and holding up his glove. He also made a runningover-the-shoulder catch in the ninth.

The Nationals were without their most prized young player, pitcher StephenStrasburg(notes), who flew back to Florida on Thursday to continue rehabilitation fromreconstructive elbow surgery that is expected to sideline him for most, if notall, of this season. But Washington did see free-agent signing Jayson Werth(notes) inaction.

In his first regular-season at-bat for the Nationals—at second in thelineup, an unusual spot for a guy with a $126 million contract and some power—Werth singled to right. And then, doing exactly what general manager Mike Rizzokeeps saying he expects, Werth went from first to third on a single by RyanZimmerman(notes).

Lowe made sure the Nationals failed to convert that two-on, one-outopportunity, though. Adam LaRoche(notes), a free agent brought in to take over for thedeparted Adam Dunn(notes) at first base, popped out to second, and Michael Morse(notes), whoearned the left-field job vacated by the traded Josh Willingham(notes), grounded out.

Four relievers combined to get the last 10 outs. Craig Kimbrel(notes) worked a1-2-3 ninth for the save, his second in the majors.

In front of a non-sellout crowd of 39,055 at Nationals Park, neither ofThursday’s starting pitchers was bothered one bit by the cold—it was 41degrees when Hernandez threw a called strike to Martin Prado(notes) for the first pitchat 1:11 p.m.—or by the misty drizzle that came and went.

The 37-year-old Lowe—more than 1 1/2 years older than Hernandez—struck outthe side in the third, including Zimmerman looking to end the inning. Zimmermanargued some with umpire Tim Welke while walking away; he tossed his bat, helmetand batting gloves on the ground, then yanked out his gum and chucked that down,too.

Lowe needed plenty of pitches, 105, and left after walking Zimmerman in thesixth. LaRoche followed by singling off lefty Eric O’Flaherty(notes), who got out of itby getting Morse to ground out.

With two outs in the first, Jones doubled to right on a 3-2 pitch in hisfirst at-bat in a regular-season game since tearing up his left knee Aug. 10. Healso singled in the ninth.

After giving up Heyward’s solo shot, Hernandez settled into a groove,retiring 16 of the 17 batters he faced the rest of the way, including 15 in arow. He got some help from Werth, who made a sliding catch of Alex Gonzalez’s(notes)sinking liner in the fifth.

Alomar becomes Jays special assistant

TORONTO (AP)—The Toronto Blue Jays have appointed former star RobertoAlomar to the position of special assistant to the organization.

Alomar recently became the first player inducted into the baseball Hall ofFame as a Blue Jay.

The team said Thursday that Alomar will be involved with baseball operationsand community efforts.

Indians’ Crowe has surgery, out 4 months

CLEVELAND (AP)—Indians outfielder Trevor Crowe(notes) has undergone rightshoulder surgery and will be sidelined for at least four months.

Crowe had the operation on his shoulder Wednesday at New York’s Hospital forSpecial Surgery, the Indians said. The 27-year-old will return to Cleveland onSaturday to begin rehabilitation.

Crowe was called up from Triple-A Columbus last May when center fielderGrady Sizemore(notes) went down with a season-ending knee injury. He batted .252 withtwo homers, 36 RBIs and 20 steals in 122 games.

Crowe’s injury opened the door for free agent Travis Buck(notes) to make theIndians’ roster this spring.

Former aide: I saw trainer inject Bonds

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Barry Bonds’ former personal shopper testified that shewitnessed the slugger’s private trainer inject Bonds in the belly button beforea road trip during the 2002 season.

Kathy Hoskins said Thursday she was in Bonds’ bedroom packing his clothesfor the road trip when the seven-time NL MVP and trainer Greg Anderson came intothe room. Anderson expressed concerns about her presence and Bonds said not toworry about Hoskins because “she’s my girl.”

Hoskins testified that she then watched Anderson inject Bonds. She saiddidn’t ask about the injection, but Bonds volunteered that it was “a littlesomething, something for when I go on the road. You can’t detect it.”

Bonds is charged with lying to a grand jury when he said no one other thanhis doctor every injected him with anything. He is also accused of lying when hetestified that he never knowingly used steroids.
