Game 3 TV rating second-lowest ever

October 31, 2010

NEW YORK (AP)—Game 3 earned the second-lowest television rating for aWorld Series game.

The Texas Rangers’ 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday nighton Fox drew a 6.7 rating and 13 share, beating only the 6.1 for Game 3 of the2008 Phillies-Rays series. That game was delayed 91 minutes because of rain anddidn’t start until after 10 p.m. on the East Coast.

The rating was down 26 percent from the 9.1 for Game 3 of last season’sYankees-Phillies World Series.

This year’s series is averaging an 8.1 through three games, up 5 percentfrom the record low of the 2008 World Series.

Saturday’s game began at 7 p.m. EDT, the earliest World Series start since1987. Baseball and network officials had for years resisted earlier start timesdespite concerns about losing younger viewers, saying the later the game, thehigher the rating—and the greater the revenue. To help offset potentialrevenue losses from the earlier Game 3 start, sponsor Chevrolet committed toincreased advertising.

For the first time during this World Series, Cablevision’s more than 3million New York-area subscribers were able to watch the game after the companysettled its dispute with Fox.

The rating is the percentage watching a program among homes with TVs. Theshare is the percentage tuned into the broadcast among those households with TVson at the time.

Struggling Burrell benched for Game 4

October 31, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Struggling San Francisco left fielder Pat Burrell(notes)was benched for Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday night.

Manager Bruce Bochy moved Cody Ross(notes) from right field to left to takeBurrell’s place, while Nate Schierholtz(notes) earned his first start of the postseasonplaying right.

“I talked to him awhile today,” Bochy said, referring to Burrell. “It’sfair to say he’s not seeing the ball. His timing’s off.”

Aubrey Huff(notes) went from first base into the designated hitter role and TravisIshikawa(notes) was set to start in Huff’s spot, also Ishikawa’s first postseasonstart.

Bochy said he “slept on it” before deciding to replace Burrell, who struckout in all four of his at-bats in the Giants’ 4-2 loss in Game 3 on Saturdaynight.

Pablo Sandoval(notes), the DH on Saturday, won’t start again Monday. Bochy saidSandoval would be available off the bench. He was 0 for 3 with a strikeout andgrounded into a double play in Game 3.

Burrell has eight Ks in nine at-bats in the World Series and is 0 for 9overall. He has 19 strikeouts in 38 at-bats this postseason. He said after Game3 he wouldn’t blame Bochy for making a change.

“My night wasn’t good. That’s not exactly how you draw it up in yourpregame routine,” Burrell said. “It’s just a bad time to struggle. There’s noway around it. I’m getting pitches to hit. I’m just not doing anything with itand chasing some balls off the plate.”

Bochy said Burrell would spend extra time in the cage Sunday and would beback in the starting lineup for Game 5 on Monday night in Arlington.

“I’ve got a lot to do,” Burrell said after Saturday’s game. “One of thethings I need to do is have better at-bats. I chase pitches. You’ve got to keepit as simple as you can this time of year. I’ve been doing this a long time andI know what it takes to compete. You’ve got to be accountable. I think it’s asmuch mental as it is anything else.”

The 34-year-old Burrell was the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Phillies in1998. He signed a minor league deal in late May after his release by Tampa Bay.

He batted .266 with 18 home runs and 51 RBIs in 96 games for the Giants. They called him up June 4 from a short stint with Triple-A Fresno. Burrell isone of six Giants already with a World Series ring, having won one withPhiladelphia two years ago.

During the regular season, five of his 18 homers came in the eighth inningor later and seven of those either tied the game or gave the Giants a lead.

“I’m just not feeling comfortable at the plate,” Burrell said. “Whenyou’re not feeling comfortable, it’s hard to get hits.”

Former Rangers owner Hicks now a fan

October 31, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Wearing a polo shirt in Rangers red, a tall manwalked without fanfare into a luxury box on the second deck of Rangers Ballpark, greeted his guests and settled down to watch the first World Series game in theMetroplex.

Less than three months ago, he used to occupy the owners’ seats next to thefirst-base dugout and the George W. Bush suite directly behind home plate. Now,with the Texas Rangers three wins from their first World Series title, he’s justanother fan.

“Very bittersweet,” Tom Hicks said. “The sale was Aug. 4. We were alreadyeight games in first place. I’ve had a real outpouring of friends and people whoare important to me call me or e-mail or written me letters, recognizing thatthis team didn’t start on Aug. 5.”

He rose to the top of the sports world, buying the NHL’s Dallas Stars in1995, the Rangers in 1998 and English soccer power Liverpool in 2007. And thenas the economy turned, he was vilified as the baseball team wound up inbankruptcy court. English soccer supporters took to the streets in Merseyside, protesting Hicks and co-owner George Gillett Jr. until the day the team was soldout from under them to the parent company of the Boston Red Sox.

Now he’s happy to be a regular season ticket-holder. Well, a seasonticket-holder who entertains in the Eddie Collins Suite, overlooking the infieldbetween home plate and third base.

“I think we’re all ready, particularly the kids,” he said Saturday night, just before the Rangers closed to 2-1 in the Series against the San FranciscoGiants. “Nobody likes to read about negative things said about their dad. We’reready to have some privacy.”

Still trying to sell the Stars, Hicks bowed out as Rangers owner on Aug. 12,eight days after a group headed by team president Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenbergbeat out Mark Cuban, the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, in a bankruptcyauction with a bid valued at $593 million.

Hicks had bought the Rangers from Bush’s group for $250 million, after Bushbecame governor of Texas and before he was elected president.

Even though Hicks no longer is owner, he feels partly responsible for theteam’s success—especially because his regime hired Jon Daniels and promotedhim to general manager five years ago.

“It’s our team. I think the smartest thing I did was take a chance on JonDaniels when he was 28 years old, stood by him when he made a couple ofmistakes. And I reached out and teamed him with Nolan, who is twice his age.Nolan is everything Jon isn’t,” Hicks said. “I’m sure Jon is one of thesmartest GMs in all of baseball, but he never played baseball. Nolan playedbaseball for 27 years and is a Hall of Fame baseball player.”

Hicks credits Ryan for giving the go-ahead on the summer acquisition ofCliff Lee(notes) from Seattle. And for some of the other pitching moves.

“Nolan has that same influence on decisions we had with Colby Lewis(notes) andgiving C.J. Wilson(notes) a chance to be a starter instead of a late-inning bullpenguy,” Hicks said.

Hicks expects the New York Yankees to make a big offer to Lee, who canbecome a free agent after the World Series—“I don’t know why they wouldn’t.”

But he thinks the Rangers will increase their full-season ticket equivalentsfrom 12,000-13,000 this year to 25,000 or even 30,000 next season.

“When you go to the World Series, your season-ticket base probably morethan doubles the following year. So this has only been a sleeping giant of amarket,” Hicks said. “The Dodgers didn’t draw 3 million fans for the first 16years and they’ve never gone below that since. Dallas-Fort Worth has a chance tobe one of those kind of markets that when we finally do draw 3 million—and Ithink we will next year—I think we’ll sustain it. And that gives you therevenue to keep the best players. If they want to keep Cliff Lee, they can. Ifthey want to keep Josh Hamilton(notes), they can.”

Before the Yankees played the Rangers in the AL championship series, AlexRodriguez(notes) and Mark Teixeira(notes) went out of their way to praise their former owner, saying they felt badly the Rangers found success only after Hicks’ departure.

In the current Rangers clubhouse, Hicks is hardly mentioned.

“When you talk about the history, yeah, he’s a part of it,” third basemanMichael Young(notes) said.

While Bush was in the clubhouse before Game 3 giving players pep talks,Hicks stayed away.

“He should be happy,” Game 4 pitcher Tommy Hunter(notes) said. “The Rangers arein the World Series.”

Hicks says he watches every Rangers game. Not so for Liverpool, even thoughits matches are readily available on U.S. television.

Hicks wouldn’t comment directly on the Liverpool situation due to potentiallitigation. But he would say, “I never became as a big a soccer fan as I am abaseball fan.”

He had four of his five sons with him at Yankee Stadium for the ALCS. Hedidn’t attend the first two World Series games in San Francisco because he hadcommitted to being at the 80th birthday party of his wife’s uncle in Napa, so hewatched on television.

For Game 3, he expected 14 guests in his suite and looked forward to meetingup with former general manager John Hart. Baseball taught Hicks some lessonsduring his decade-plus.

“There are no shortcuts. I was able to shortcut making the Dallas StarsStanley Cup champions. I tried that in baseball. There’s no such thing,” hesaid. “In hockey, you’ve got to have a great goaltender. In baseball you haveto have pitching.”

Because of the bankruptcy case in Fort Worth and all the acrimony, he thinkshis reputation suffered. Yet, he thinks the sale turned out the way it wouldhave, anyway.

“I think what the average fan doesn’t understand is the impasse that wasreached. I mean, I picked this group to be the buyer. The creditors wouldn’tallow that to happen because they thought there was a higher price to beobtained, and in hindsight they were correct,” he said. “But to break thatdeadlock was ugly, and the average fan doesn’t understand why. They justunderstand it was ugly. It was the only way to end it.”

Feliz saves Rangers’ first Series win

October 31, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Texas closer Neftali Feliz(notes) saved more games thisseason than any rookie in baseball history. Now he’s got another claim to fame:having saved the first World Series victory in franchise history.

Feliz retired the San Francisco Giants in order in the top of the ninth inGame 3 on Saturday night to protect a 4-2 victory. Using his usual array ofpitches—fast, faster and fastest—Feliz needed only 13 pitches to put anemphatic finish on a victory that gets the Rangers back into the Series, nowtrailing only 2-1.

“I was very grateful to have the chance to close the first World Seriesvictory,” he said through a translator.

The 22-year-old Feliz also bumped his boss Nolan Ryan down a peg in theWorld Series record book. Feliz became the second-youngest pitcher ever to savea Series game, dropping Ryan to third. The youngest was Bob Welch of the Dodgersat 21 in 1978.

Oddly enough, the Rangers had only one save all postseason, and it was by40-year-old Darren Oliver(notes).

Feliz had pitched in five of Texas’ previous 13 postseason games, but nonewas a save situation. He had seven strikeouts in 4 1-3 innings, allowing twohits and one run, a homer. He had yet to get into a Series game.

He entered at the start of the ninth and struck out Pat Burrell(notes) swinging.Cody Ross(notes) flied out to right field, then Juan Uribe(notes) swung and missed to end it.Cameras flashed throughout Uribe’s at-bat as a crowd of 52,419—biggest ever atRangers Ballpark—wanted to capture the memorable final out.

“He had great stuff,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “I mean, he hadn’tpitched in a while, and he had good command, too. It was an impressive outingfor him. You’ve got a guy out there throwing 98, 99 with command, the kid did agreat job. He’s had a great year, and we know how good his stuff is, and heshowed it tonight.”

Feliz threw 10 strikes and three balls.

“I was mentally ready,” Feliz said. “I was trying to keep all my pitcheslow. That’s what I did and I did my job.”

IS THERE A K IN BURRELL? Giants manager Bruce Bochy is going to think aboutwhether he should get Pat Burrell out of the lineup.

Burrell struck out in all four at-bats in Game 3, giving him eightstrikeouts in nine at-bats in the World Series and 19 in 38 at-bats thispostseason.

He ended the first inning by striking out with two runners on base. Hisfinal K came leading off the ninth.

“His timing is off probably a little bit, which happens,” Bochy said.“He’s a big reason why we’re here, with the huge hits he’s gotten. Sure, youhope he comes out of it, and it was a tough night for him. But he can handle it.The one thing about Pat, sometimes he doesn’t get a big hit, but he’s gettingbig walks, things like that, to find a way to get on base.”

Burrell said he’s getting good pitches to hit, but he’s also chased some badones. He’s hoping to redeem himself, but he also understands this isn’tmid-July. It’s the World Series and a manager may not be able to let him playhis way out of a slump.

“I’d be disappointed of course; you want to play,” he said. “Could Iblame him? Probably not.”

TEXAS HEAT: Nolan Ryan got the Texas Rangers’ first World Series home gameoff to a blazin’ start.

The Ryan Express threw out the ceremonial first pitch to another formerRangers star, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez. It was a great moment for a crowdbursting with pride—even if the pitch bounced into the mitt.

Maybe Pudge called for a breaking ball. The ball hit the dirt behind theplate to Rodriguez’s right; had there been a left-handed hitter, he probablywould have danced out of the way.

Or maybe it was the way Ryan was dressed—in black slacks, a white longsleeve shirt and a Rangers-red tie.

Rodriguez came up with the Rangers back when Ryan was still pitching. He wasa star on Texas’ three division champion teams in the 1990s, named AL MVP in1999. He returned late last season, then played for the Washington Nationalsthis year.

“When they won the American League, I was at home watching it and I gotgoose bumps,” Rodriguez said. “My eyes got wet to see that because I feel likeI am a part of it. I was here for such a long time, so any success this team hasI’m happy for that.”

REMEMBERING THE ’62 SERIES: Felipe Alou still thinks about that missed buntin the ninth inning in Game 7 of the 1962 World Series, which his Giants lost tothe New York Yankees.

Had he laid the bunt down, it would have moved his brother Matty from firstto second. The Giants lost the game 1-0. It ended when Willie McCovey lined outto second baseman Bobby Richardson with runners on second and third.

“You’ve got to be ready to bunt in the World Series. I was not ready,” the75-year-old Alou said Saturday, sitting in the dugout before Game 3 of the WorldSeries. “I drove in 98 runs that year. When I saw the bunt sign, I had mydoubts. That’s what this team is all about. (Bruce) Bochy has them ready to dowhatever, and they respond to it.”

Alou, a former right fielder and three-time All-Star as a player, is proudof the fact some of these current Giants are guys he used to manage.

“Yeah, it’s pride,” Alou said.

Bochy came aboard for the 2007 campaign after Alou’s fourth season asskipper. Alou now serves as a special assistant to general manager Brian Sabean.

While he couldn’t win it all for a city that is still waiting for its firstWorld Series title since moving West in 1958, Alou would be thrilled to see itfinally happen.

“For this group of players to be the first group of players to win in SanFrancisco is really something,” he said. “When we went to spring training, people talked about winning the World Series. The team we had in ’62, that wassome kind of team.”

Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal, also on hand at Rangers Ballpark inArlington to cheer on his former club, would be equally as thrilled to see theseGiants come through.

“They remind me of ’62. But we went all the way and couldn’t do it,”Marichal said.

NO-HIT HUNTER: Since Tommy Hunter’s(notes) scheduled start for Texas in the WorldSeries comes in Rangers Ballpark in Game 4 on Sunday night, he won’t get thechance to hit like Cliff Lee(notes) and C.J. Wilson(notes) did the first two games in SanFrancisco.

Asked Saturday if he was disappointed, Hunter starting laughing.

“It would have been fun, but I mean, I’m probably not a very good hitter,”Hunter said. “I’ll just throw that out. I’m probably not very good at all.Hand-eye coordination is probably off since high school.”

Lee went 1 for 2 with a double. Wilson went 0 for 1 with a sacrifice bunt.

Giants’ Sanchez has another rough outing

October 31, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Jonathan Sanchez(notes) is lights-out when he’s on—takehis no-hitter against the Padres in July 2009—or jittery and way off when he’snot.

Saturday was one of those off days.

The lefty allowed two home runs in Game 3 of the World Series against theTexas Rangers, who won 4-2. The Giants lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 andwill send rookie Madison Bumgarner(notes) to the mound Sunday night in Game 4 atRangers Ballpark.

Leading up to this outing, all Sanchez wanted to do was move forward fromhis flop in the NL championship series clincher a week earlier. He was doneafter two-plus innings—and after contributing to the benches clearing in thethird inning. Sanchez plunked Chase Utley(notes) and then yelled at the All-Star secondbaseman for tossing the ball back toward the mound on his way to first base. Nopunches were thrown and nobody was ejected, though Sanchez was pulled afterfacing only 12 batters.

The Giants went on to win 3-2, using five other pitchers to do so.

On Saturday, Sanchez lasted a little longer but not much. He was tagged forfour runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings. He struck out three and walked three, trailing 4-0 when he gave way to Guillermo Mota(notes). Rookie and No. 9 hitter MitchMoreland(notes) hit a three-run homer in the second and Josh Hamilton(notes) a solo drive inthe fifth for his first clout of the Series. Sanchez’s postseason ERA jumpedfrom 2.93 to 4.05.

He didn’t get much help in this one, either. After the Giants combined toscore 20 runs in the first two games in their home ballpark, they didn’t scoreany runs when Sanchez was on the mound. They later got to Colby Lewis(notes) with apair of solo homers in the Rangers’ first ever World Series game at home.

The 27-year-old Sanchez, a 13-game winner this year, has been waiting foryears to pitch in important games and on the biggest stage. He spent the 2006and ’07 seasons primarily in the bullpen before getting his shot at a regularstarting job the next season.

It was Sanchez who on the final day of the 2010 regular season pitched theGiants past the San Diego Padres to clinch the NL West—in their third try atcapturing the club’s first division crown and playoff berth since 2003.

He was 4-1 with a 1.03 ERA over his last seven regular-season outings.

After manager Bruce Bochy went with ace Tim Lincecum(notes), Matt Cain(notes) and Sanchezin that order for the NL division series against Atlanta, Bochy swapped Cain andSanchez in the NLCS to pitch Sanchez in Game 2. Bochy said he did it to split upthe righties—Lincecum and Cain—and lefties.

The skipper returned to the original rotation for the World Series. ButSanchez couldn’t follow the two strong outings by his teammates, and let theRangers right back in it.

Rangers’ bats break out in Texas

October 31, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Mitch Moreland(notes) is the kid who might not even be inthe majors had the Texas Rangers not traded for Cliff Lee(notes).

Now the rookie first baseman is one of the big bats in a Texas lineup thatfinally showed some life in the World Series.

Moreland hit a three-run homer that put the Rangers ahead to stay, JoshHamilton(notes) added a solo shot and the Rangers won their first World Series homegame, beating San Francisco 4-2 on Saturday night to cut their deficit to 2-1 inthe best-of-seven series.

Returning home to Rangers Ballpark cured the ailing Texas bats after twomiserable games by the bay at AT&T park, where the Rangers still have never wona game. They need to change that if they’re going to win this World Series.

The AL champion Rangers showed their resiliency once again. If they hadn’t,the first World Series in the franchise’s 50 seasons would be nearly done.

Hamilton, Michael Young(notes) and Nelson Cruz(notes) had gone a combined 3 for 25 overtwo nights in San Francisco, where the Rangers hit .227 and were outscored 20-9.

Cruz had a leadoff double in the second inning and was at third beforeBengie Molina(notes) drew a two-out walk. Moreland then fouled off four consecutive 2-2pitches against left-hander Jonathan Sanchez(notes) before the No. 9 hitter in thelineup knocked a ball into the right-field seats.

Hamilton, like Young 1 for 8 with no RBIs in the first two games, homered inthe fifth to make it 4-0, sending the already-excited Rangers Ballpark recordcrowd of 52,419 into an absolute frenzy.

Young, the longest-tenured Rangers player in his 10th season and the team’scareer hits leader, got back on track with two singles.

By winning Game 3, the Rangers don’t even have to consider pitching Lee onthree days’ rest because Sunday won’t be a potential elimination game.

Tommy Hunter(notes) starts Game 4. Lee, who took his first postseason loss with hisshortest outing (4 2-3 innings) in Game 1, gets the ball for Game 5 on Mondaynight.

The Rangers acquired Lee on July 9 from Seattle after it appeared the aceleft-hander was headed to the defending World Series champion New York Yankees. One of the reasons Texas was able to make the deal was the willingness to traderookie first baseman Justin Smoak(notes), a top prospect already playing in the majors.

Moreland became the Rangers’ fifth starting first baseman when he made hismajor league debut July 27. Chris Davis(notes), Ryan Garko(notes) and Joaquin Arias(notes) had alsostarted there for Texas.

Two days later, veteran Jorge Cantu(notes) was acquired from Florida in a trade. The plan was to let the right-handed hitting Cantu play mostly againstleft-handed pitchers, and the left-handed hitting Moreland would get the othergames.

Texas manager Ron Washington went into the playoffs expecting to stick withthat plan even though Cantu hit only .235 with one home run and two RBIs in 30regular-season games for Texas.

Cantu started Game 1 of the division series against Tampa Bay left-handerDavid Price(notes) and went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Cantu also started theopener of the AL championship series against Yankees lefty CC Sabathia(notes) and went0 for 3. Cantu has gotten only one other at-bat this postseason.

Moreland has hit in 11 of his last 12 playoff games. His biggest hit came inGame 3 off a left-hander when he did what Lee hasn’t been able to do yet: helpthe Rangers win a World Series game.

Because of Moreland and the rest of the bats, Lee will definitely getanother chance.

Series Breakdown

Rookie Mitch Moreland(notes) hit an early three-run homer, Josh Hamilton(notes) laterlaunched a 426-foot shot and the Rangers became the first team from Texas to wina Series game.

Game 3 marked the first time the Series visited the Metroplex. On a collegefootball weekend, the parking lots filled up early with flying pigskins and fineBBQ smoke.

But Lewis and the Rangers showed there was still a place in the Lone StarState for baseball, too. And they certainly brought more joy than the Cowboys, whose gleaming stadium is just a few Hamilton-sized drives.

Big Tex himself, Nolan Ryan, got former President George W. Bush and therest of the sellout crowd jazzed when he cranked up for the ceremonial firsttoss. The Rangers’ part-owner brought his heater—at 68 mph, pretty swift for a63-year-old guy wearing dress pants and a tie.

Then it was time for Lewis to take over. He worked around solo home runs byCody Ross(notes) in the seventh inning and Andres Torres(notes) in the eighth. The Giantseventually brought the tying run to the plate, but reliever Darren O’Day(notes) retiredBuster Posey(notes) to end the eighth.

Texas manager Ron Washington finally brought in Neftali Feliz(notes) in the ninth, and the rocket-armed closer earned his first save of the postseason. Washingtonwas criticized in the first two games at San Francisco for leaving Feliz in thebullpen while the Giants broke away.

No team in World Series history has overcome a 3-0 deficit and now Texaswon’t have to try, either. Rangers starter Tommy Hunter(notes), especially good athome, faces rookie Madison Bumgarner(notes) in Game 4 on Sunday night.

Lewis picked up where he left off in the AL championship series, where hefinished off the defending champion Yankees in Game 6.

Lewis allowed five hits in 7 2-3 innings and struck out six. He stopped aGiants team that had become the first NL team to score at least nine runs inback-to-back Series game.

The Rangers looked more like themselves with Vladimir Guerrero(notes) back in theDH spot.

Moreland, promoted to the majors in late July, won a tough at-bat againstJonathan Sanchez(notes) with a three-run homer in the second on the ninth pitch.

Feliz stuck out two in a perfect ninth, setting off a big celebration. Bushleaned over and kissed Ryan’s wife as fireworks exploded overhead.

At a burly 6-foot-4, Lewis is built something like a fullback. He surescored big for the Lone Star State in this one.

Lewis is a below-.500 pitcher for his career, not including the two seasonshe recently spent pitching for Hiroshima in the Japan league. Despite a shakyrecord, he’s known for this trait: He gets tougher in tight situations.

Lewis escaped a two-on jam in the first by getting Pat Burrell(notes) to fish for abreaking ball, and worked around a leadoff walk to Ross in the second.

The next time he got on the mound, he already had a nice cushion.

Nelson Cruz(notes) opened the Texas second with a double off the center-field walland eighth-place hitter Bengie Molina(notes) drew a walk. It was trouble time forSanchez—he owned the best hits-to-innings ratio in the NL this year, yet alsoled the league in walks and can unravel quickly.

Moreland hung in, fouling off four straight 2-2 pitches and barely getting apiece on a couple of them. He then took a smooth swing sent a liner far into theright-field seats for his first career home run against a left-hander.

It was the big hit the Rangers needed to get back into the Series. The crowdroared and Ryan stood up, thrust his right arm in the air and hollered.

Hamilton gave his boss another thrill in the fifth. A bit jumpy at the plateearly in the game, the probable AL MVP patiently waited for his pitch andlaunched a drive deep into the lower deck in right-center field.

Sanchez, who got just six outs against Philadelphia in his previous start, gave up four runs, six hits and three walks in 4 2-3 innings, raising his ERA to4.05 in four postseason starts. He was replaced by Guillermo Mota(notes), who hadstarted warming up in the third.

Notes: The Rangers had lost 13 of their previous 14 games against theGiants. … Texas teams were 0-6 in the Series until this game. The HoustonAstros were swept by the Chicago White Sox in 2005.

Moreland’s homer gives Rangers 3-0 lead

October 31, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Mitch Moreland(notes) hit a three-run homer off JonathanSanchez(notes), Josh Hamilton(notes) added a solo shot and the Texas Rangers took a 4-0 leadover the San Francisco Giants after six innings Saturday night as they tried toclaw back from a 2-0 World Series deficit.

Nelson Cruz(notes) doubled off the center-field wall leading off the second and,two outs later, Bengie Molina(notes) drew a walk from Sanchez, the major league walksleader.

Moreland, the No. 9 hitter, fouled off four straight 2-2 pitches beforelining the ninth pitch of his at-bat into the right-field seats. It was therookie’s first home run against a left-hander, and it sent Rangers presidentNolan Ryan jumping out of his first-row seat, arm raised.

Hamilton pounced on a hanging curve with two outs in the fifth, sending it426 feet deep into the right-field stands. It was his fifth home run of thepostseason and first of the World Series.

Rangers starter Colby Lewis(notes) allowed three hits in the first six innings, struck out five and walked two. The Giants didn’t advance a runner past second.

Sanchez, who got just six outs against Philadelphia in his previous start, gave up four runs, six hits and three walks in 4 2-3 innings, raising his ERA to4.05 in four postseason starts. After Hamilton’s homer, he walked VladimirGuerrero(notes) and was replaced by Guillermo Mota(notes), who had started warming up in thethird.

Forty of the previous 51 teams to take a 2-0 Series lead went on to win thetitle, including 13 of the last 14. The lone exception was the 1996 AtlantaBraves, who lost to the New York Yankees in six games. Every team to go up 3-0has won the championship.

In Game 4 on Sunday night—only the third Halloween game in Series history— Madison Bumgarner(notes) starts for the Giants against Tommy Hunter(notes).

The first World Series game in Arlington began at 6 p.m. CDT, the earlieststart time in the World Series since Game 2 in 1987. With the sun still shiningon the upper deck in left, the ballpark had more the look of a midsummerAll-Star game than of an autumn World Series.

Ryan threw out the ceremonial first pitch to former Rangers All-Star catcherIvan Rodriguez(notes), a 68 mph toss from the top of the mound. Ryan then took a seatnear the Rangers dugout, where former First Lady Laura Bush sat between the Hallof Famer and former President George W. Bush, who wore a blue Rangers jacket.Bush’s group owned the Rangers from 1989-98.

Tom Hicks, who owned the team from 1998 until selling it in August to thegroup headed by Ryan and Chuck Greenberg, watched from a suite between thirdbase and the mound.

With the shift to the AL ballpark, Guerrero was in his usual designatedhitter spot for the Rangers and Pablo Sandoval(notes) got his first Series start as theGiants’ DH.

Guerrero was benched for Game 2, a day after making two errors in rightfield in the opener. Cruz moved to left in place of David Murphy(notes), and JeffFrancoeur(notes) got his first Series start in right.

Sandoval entered just 3 for 14 (.214) in the postseason.

San Francisco threatened in the first on Freddy Sanchez’s(notes) one-out single andBuster Posey’s(notes) two-out walk, but Pat Burrell(notes) struck out.

Michael Young(notes) singled with one out in the bottom half on a pop to short leftthat Burrell got a slow start on, and the ball popped out of his glove as hetried for a diving catch. Josh Hamilton popped out to third baseman Juan Uribe(notes)in short left, and Guerrero hit a fly to deep left that appeared to get knockeddown by the wind.

Cody Ross(notes) walked leading off the second, but Uribe fouled out and Sandovalgrounded into a double play.

Ryan throws out first pitch for Rangers

October 30, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Nolan Ryan got the Texas Rangers’ first World Serieshome game off to a blazin’ start.

The Ryan Express threw out the ceremonial first pitch to another formerRangers star, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez. It was a great moment for a crowdbursting with pride—even if the pitch bounced into the mitt.

Maybe Pudge called for a breaking ball. The pitch bounced behind the plateto Rodriguez’s right; had there been a left-handed hitter, he probably wouldhave danced out of the way. Rodriguez gloved it easily.

“It was great, a great atmosphere, the fans are very alive,” Rodriguezsaid. “To be able to be in that ceremony, with the Rangers being in the WorldSeries for the first time in history, was an honor for me.”

The pitch certainly didn’t leave a trail of smoke, like Ryan’s first pitchfor Game 1 of the AL championship series. That one was estimated in the mid-80sby catcher Jim Sundberg, who wasn’t told that a heater was coming.

“I split my pants going down to catch it,” Sundberg said. “Ripped ‘em.Can’t wear them anymore. Tore ‘em right in the seam. They’re done.”

Ryan had another good excuse for this one-hopper—he was wearing dressclothes, black slacks, a white long sleeve shirt and a Rangers-red tie.

So he wasn’t about to miss this historic first. When he called the club tosay he was coming for Game 3, they made him work for his seats. Sort of.

Rodriguez received a loud ovation and, smiling wide, offered several heartywaves. After he and Ryan shook hands and posed for pictures, Rodriguez got a hugfrom the guy who ran the team during his days here—former President George W.Bush, who was wearing a Rangers jacket.

Ryan didn’t greet Bush from the field. He didn’t have to because he wassitting in that same front row, on the other side of former First Lady LauraBush.

GOOD ‘OL TEXAS BOOTS: Giants managing partner Bill Neukom, always making astyle statement with his array of bowties, is getting into the Texas spirit inArlington, too. Neukom has been sporting some brown leather cowboy boots withwhite stitching since the World Series shifted to the Lone Star State forSaturday night’s Game 3.

The boots were made in Texas, so Neukom felt it was fitting to wear themnow. He has a few pairs of cowboy boots as he does some horseback riding in hisfree time.

“It’s the perfect place to wear them,” said Neukom, thrilled to be in theWorld Series in his second full season as top owner.

SF DH: Giants manager Bruce Bochy planned to wait until after Saturdaynight’s Game 3 to decide on his designated hitter for Game 4 on Sunday. He wentwith Pablo Sandoval(notes) in Game 3 in the eighth spot of the order, opting to keepthe lineup intact from what had worked in the first two games—when the Giantsscored a combined 20 runs.

“Pablo, he’s a good hitter. He’s a dangerous hitter,” Bochy said. “Itworks out well for us to have him DH and it keeps Edgar (Renteria) and (Juan)Uribe on the left side of the infield. He’s excited. I know he’s been antsy toget out there. As far as tomorrow, we’ll see how it goes tonight.”

Other options Bochy is considering are using Travis Ishikawa(notes) as the DH or atfirst base and giving Aubrey Huff(notes) a chance as designated hitter.
