BOSTON (AP)—David Ortiz(notes) lined a three-run double to the left-center gap withone out in the ninth inning Saturday to give the Boston Red Sox a 5-4 victoryover the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.
It was the 18th game-ending hit of his career.

Mauer has cortisone shot, out 2 games

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Joe Mauer(notes) is expected to miss two games after receiving acortisone shot in his right shoulder following the Minnesota Twins’ 4-0 victoryover the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night.
The reigning American League MVP, Mauer has been dealing with tendinitissince he took a foul tip off the shoulder earlier in July. Minnesota manager RonGardenhire said an MRI on the shoulder came back clean.
Gardenhire says he will miss Sunday and likely Monday. He says Mauer likelywould have sat Sunday anyway.
The soreness hasn’t seemed to hurt his swing.
Mauer hit .344 in July with 19 runs, 12 doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIin 23 games.

When the outfielder turned and threw quickly, the ball slipped from hishand and rolled across the outfield, allowing the catcher to chug home.
Bronson Arroyo(notes) (11-6) gave up five hits in seven innings against astruggling offense now missing its most productive hitter.
Francisco Cordero(notes), who took the loss in Atlanta’s 6-4 win on Friday night,got booed when he was introduced to start the ninth. He gave up a pair ofsingles, then got Jason Heyward(notes) on a called third strike for his 28th save in 34tries.
Heyward had doubled home a pair of runs in the 10th inning off Cordero forAtlanta’s win the previous night.
The Braves will be without Prado for at least a week. Tests on Saturdayfound he broke the second knuckle on his right pinkie when he slid headfirstinto home plate on Friday night. Prado leads the league in hits, ranks thirdwith a .315 average, and leads the majors with 44 multihit games.
As the game began, the Braves made a five-player deal with Kansas City toimprove their outfield and an already formidable bullpen, getting Rick Ankiel(notes)and hard-throwing Kyle Farnsworth(notes).
Cincinnati entered the day a half-game behind St. Louis in the NL Central.The Reds made no moves before the non-waiver trade deadline Saturday—a coupleof potential deals for relievers fell through.
Then, they pulled out a strange win.
Jurrjens took a 2-1 lead into the seventh, in line for his first road win ofthe season. The right-hander is 0-4 in seven road starts.
Scott Rolen(notes) homered in the fourth and doubled to start the go-ahead rally inthe seventh. Jay Bruce(notes) singled to tie it, and Hanigan doubled off a padded fencepost in center. He kept going when the ball slipped out of Cabrera’s hand androlled across the outfield for a two-base error.
Hanigan completed the breathtaking play by sliding into home, then poppingup quickly and smacking his hands together. He panted in the dugout whilelaughing teammates congratulated him.
The Reds drew their second straight capacity crowd. They expect to sell outthe weekend series on Sunday, the first time they’ve had three consecutivesellouts since 2004, when Ken Griffey Jr.(notes) was trying for his 500th homer.

Royals extend manager Yost through 2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Royals manager Ned Yost has received a two-year contractextension that would keep him in charge of Kansas City through the 2012 season.
Royals general manager Dayton Moore announced the extension Saturday.
Yost joined the Royals’ front office on Jan. 13 as special adviser tobaseball operations before replacing manager Trey Hillman, who was fired May 13.The Royals were 31-37 entering Saturday night’s game since Yost took over.
Yost managed the Milwaukee Brewers to a 457-502 record from 2003-08, and wasa member of the Atlanta Braves coaching staff from 1991-2002.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)—Robinson Cano’s(notes) 21st home run of the season snappeda ninth-inning tie and enabled the New York Yankees to beat the Tampa Bay Rays5-4 and hang on to first place in the AL East on Saturday night.

While Alex Rodriguez(notes) failed for the ninth consecutive game to hit his 600thcareer homer, Mark Teixeira(notes) and Nick Swisher(notes) went deep for the defending worldchampions, who rallied from an early deficit against Matt Garza(notes) before beatingAll-Star closer Rafael Soriano(notes) (2-1) on Cano’s drive into the right field seats.
Garza allowed four runs and five hits over seven innings in his first outingsince pitching the first no-hitter in Tampa Bay history. He gave up a sacrificefly to Curtis Granderson(notes) in the second and game-tying home runs to Teixeira andSwisher in the sixth and seventh innings.
Teixeira’s two-run shot erased a 3-1 Yankees deficit. Swisher’s solo homermade it 4-all after Tampa Bay had regained the lead on Matt Joyce’s(notes) two-out,sixth-inning homer off Javier Vazquez(notes). Evan Longoria(notes), Carl Crawford(notes) and JasonBartlett(notes) also drove in runs for the Rays.
David Robertson(notes) (2-3) pitched a perfect inning for the win. Mariano Rivera(notes)worked the ninth for his 22nd save in 24 opportunities, ending Tampa Bay’sseven-game winning streak and increasing New York’s division lead oversecond-place Tampa Bay to two games in the AL East.
Rodriguez, 9 for 37 with eight RBIs since hitting career homer No. 599 onJuly 22, went 0 for 3 with a walk and one strikeout.
The victory capped a busy day for the Yankees, who put together three dealsbefore Saturday’s trade deadline, acquiring slugger Lance Berkman(notes) from theHouston Astros and outfielder Austin Kearns(notes) and reliever Kerry Wood(notes) from theCleveland Indians.
Berkman made his debut for his new team, batting second and going 0 for 4with a strikeout as the designated hitter. Kearns was available off the bench,and Yankees manager Joe Girardi said there’s a chance Wood could join the teamin time for Sunday’s season finale against the Rays.
Tampa Bay didn’t make nearly as much noise before the 4 p.m. deadline,acquiring reliever Chad Qualls(notes) from the Arizona Diamondbacks but coming up shortin other efforts to bolster the roster for the final two months of the regularseason—and possibly beyond.
Manager Joe Maddon said before the game that he wasn’t concerned that theYankees made some high-profile moves, while the Rays will go forward withessentially the same roster.
“From our perspective, we’re good right now. We’re playing well,” Maddonsaid. “We did try to do some different things we thought could help us withoutinterfering with what was going on. It did not want to happen, so your just turnthe page and move on.”
Garza, who walked one and struck out nine, limited the Yankees to a pair ofdoubles by Cano until Derek Jeter(notes) led off the sixth with a doubled over Joyce’shead in right field. After Berkman fouled out, Teixeira brought a largecontingent of New York fans among the sold-out crowd of 36,973 to their feetwith his 21st homer to make it 3-all.
The right-hander settled to strike out Rodriguez and Cano to end the inning,but the Yankees weren’t finished. After Joyce homered off Vazquez to put TampaBay up 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Swisher teed off on a 3-2 pitch fromGarza leading off the seventh as New York pulled even again.
Swisher also homered in Friday night’s 3-2 loss the Rays. His 12 homersagainst the Rays since the start of the 2009 season are the most by any playeroff Tampa Bay pitching.
Vazquez allowed four runs and eight hits over 6 1-3 innings.

CHICAGO (AP)—Dallas Braden(notes) pitched his third complete game of the season,Kevin Kouzmanoff(notes) homered among his three hits and the Oakland Athletics endedthe Chicago White Sox’s 12-game home winning streak, 6-2 Saturday night.

Tigers RHP Galarraga to make next start

BOSTON (AP)—Detroit Tigers right-hander Armando Galarraga(notes) says he will makehis next start.
Galarraga left Friday night’s game after being hit by a line drive from thebat of Kevin Youkilis(notes) on his right ankle. He was limping around the clubhousebefore Saturday’s game against the Red Sox and said it’s sore, but not sopainful that it keeps him from walking.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland says there was no broken bone.
Galarraga is perhaps best known for his near-perfect game in June that wasspoiled by a bad call on what should have been the final out.
Galarraga is 3-3 with a 4.28 ERA this season.

Braves get Ankiel, Farnsworth from KC

CINCINNATI (AP)—The NL East-leading Atlanta Braves have acquired outfielderRick Ankiel(notes), reliever Kyle Farnsworth(notes) and cash from the Kansas City Royals in afive-player deal.
Atlanta sent pitchers Tim Collins and Jesse Chavez(notes) and outfielder GregorBlanco(notes) to Kansas City on Saturday.
The 31-year-old Ankiel hit .261 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 27 gamesfor Kansas City.
The 34-year-old Farnsworth is 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA.
