Padres put SS Cabrera on 15-day DL

SAN DIEGO (AP)—The San Diego Padres have placed shortstop Everth Cabrera(notes)on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring Friday.
Cabrera has missed three straight games and the move is retroactive toTuesday.
The Padres selected the contract of infielder Lance Zawadzki from Triple-APortland. To create room on the 40-man roster, the club moved infielder MattAntonelli(notes) to the 60-day disabled list with broken bone in his left hand.
Zawadzki is hitting .162 with one double, two RBIs and eight runs scored in17 games for Portland.

White Sox RF Jones scratched vs. Yankees

NEW YORK (AP)—White Sox right fielder Andruw Jones(notes) has been scratched fromChicago’s game against the New York Yankees with back spasms.
Jayson Nix(notes) replaced Jones in the starting lineup and was batting seventh forFriday night’s series opener at Yankee Stadium.
Jones is off to a nice start in the field and at the plate, batting. 259with six homers and nine RBIs in 17 games.

Mets win eighth straight, rout Phils 9-1

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Rod Barajas(notes) homered twice, Jonathon Niese(notes) pitched sevenimpressive innings and the surging New York Mets routed the PhiladelphiaPhillies 9-1 on Friday night for their eighth straight victory.
David Wright(notes) and Jeff Francoeur(notes) also homered for the Mets, riding theirlongest winning streak since a 10-game run in July 2008.

Coming off a 9-1 homestand that produced a surprise lead in the NL East, NewYork dominated its first meeting this season with the rival Phillies, winners oftwo consecutive pennants and three straight division titles.
With the Phillies already down big in the ninth, Brad Lidge(notes) was hit hard inhis first outing of the year.
Francoeur came out in the seventh with a bruised left elbow, soon after hewas hit by a pitch from Danys Baez(notes). In the eighth, Mets rookie Jenrry Mejia(notes)plunked Chase Utley(notes) on the leg.
Niese (1-1) shut down Philadelphia’s powerful lineup, allowing one run andfour hits for his third major league win and first since July 25, 2009, atHouston. He matched a career high with seven strikeouts.
The left-hander yielded Carlos Ruiz’s(notes) RBI single in the second, then retired14 straight until Jayson Werth’s(notes) single leading off the seventh.
Wright and Francoeur connected during a three-run second inning against KyleKendrick(notes) (0-1). Jason Bay(notes) doubled leading off and scored on Wright’s homer tostraightaway center. It was Wright’s 12th homer at Citizens Bank Park, more thanany other active visiting player, and 20th overall against the Phillies.
Francoeur added a solo shot two batters later. Barajas, who drove in threeruns, homered leading off the fifth and continued to torment his former team.Since his one unpopular season in Philadelphia in 2007, Barajas is 12 for 21with six homers, three doubles and 13 RBIs against the Phillies.
It was Barajas’ ninth career multihomer game and second this season. He alsohomered twice on April 9 against Washington.
Barajas’ second homer came off Lidge, who was making his 2010 debut aftermissing the first month of the season following operations on his right knee andright elbow. The closer gave up sharp hits to two of his three batters in theninth, managing only one out on a liner to right.
New York scored four runs in the seventh off Baez, who walked Niese duringthe rally. Barajas hit an RBI double, Angel Pagan(notes) had a two-run triple and JoseReyes singled home another run.
Pagan finished with three hits, including a double. Barajas also scoredthree times from the No. 8 spot in the batting order.
The Mets have won only three of their last 14 games against Philadelphia,and two of nine at Citizens Bank Park.

Astros’ Berkman held out vs. Braves

ATLANTA (AP)—Houston first baseman Lance Berkman(notes) has a minor groin injury andis not starting Friday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
The Braves are missing shortstop Yunel Escobar(notes), who is day to day with astrained left adductor.
Houston manager Brad Mills(notes) says Berkman tweaked his left groin running tofirst base in his last at-bat against Cincinnati on Thursday night. Geoff Blum(notes)is the fill-in starter at first base.
Berkman missed the first 12 games of the season following arthroscopicsurgery on his left knee on March 13.
Omar Infante(notes) is filling in for Escobar, who suffered his injury Thursday atSt. Louis.
Also, Braves manager Bobby Cox plans to push back right-hander JairJurrjens’(notes) next start to May 8. Jurrjens suffered a strained left hamstring inThursday’s start.

Twins 1B Morneau returns to lineup

CLEVELAND (AP)—Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau(notes) returned to thelineup for Friday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians after beingsidelined with a stiff back.
Morneau left Tuesday’s game in Detroit and didn’t play Wednesday andThursday. He took early batting practice Friday and told manager Ron Gardenhirehe was ready to play.
Gardenhire said the stiffness isn’t related to the back injury that forcedMorneau out of the lineup late last season. He didn’t play after Sept. 12,missing the Twins’ run to the AL Central title and the playoffs.
The 2006 AL MVP is third in the league with a .352 batting average. Prior toTuesday’s game, in which he struck out in all three at-bats against JustinVerlander(notes), he had reached base in each of Minnesota’s first 19 games.

Reds put OF Dickerson on 15-day DL

CINCINNATI (AP)—The Cincinnati Reds have placed outfielder Chris Dickerson(notes) onthe 15-day disabled list with a sprained right wrist that has been bothering himfor a while.
Dickerson aggravated it on a swing during a 4-2 win in Houston on Thursdaynight. He batted .227 with no homers or RBIs during nine games.
The Reds called up Chris Heisey(notes) (HI’-zee) from Triple-A Louisville to makehis major league debut during a weekend series in St. Louis. The 25-year-oldoutfielder was the team’s minor league player of the year last season. He wasbatting .241 with four homers and 13 RBIs at Louisville.

O’s Bergesen to start Saturday vs. BoSox

BALTIMORE (AP)—The Baltimore Orioles will recall Brad Bergesen(notes) from Triple-ANorfolk and start the right-hander against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.
Bergesen was demoted to Norfolk on April 20 after beginning his second bigleague season at 0-2 with a 12.19 ERA over three starts. He was 7-5 with a 3.43ERA as a rookie last season.
Manager Dave Trembley talked with Bergesen on Friday and said the pitcher is“more relaxed, a lot more sure of himself.” Trembley said Bergesen last monthwas overthrowing and relying too heavily on his breaking ball.
Bergesen will be recalled either Friday night or Saturday, and the Orioleswill make a corresponding roster move at that time.

Uecker has successful heart surgery

MILWAUKEE (AP)—Milwaukee Brewers radio announcer Bob Uecker is recoveringafter what the team says was successful heart surgery.
In a statement released Friday, Uecker’s surgeon said he replaced the75-year-old broadcaster’s aortic valve, aortic root and part of his ascendingaorta. He also performed a coronary bypass.
Uecker said this week that he expects to be away from the team for up tothree months while recovering from surgery but hopes to return to work as soonas possible.
Uecker is in his 40th season broadcasting Brewers games. He also has starredin commercials and the television sitcom “Mr. Belvedere.”

TORONTO (AP)—Alex Gonzalez hit two home runs and Vernon Wells(notes) also connected,leading Brandon Morrow(notes) and the Toronto Blue Jays over the Oakland Athletics 10-2Friday night.
Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the second inning and led off the sixthwith a drive down the left-field line. It was the eighth multihomer game of hiscareer.

Cahill made his first start of the season after being called up to pitch inplace of Brett Anderson(notes), who has an ailing left elbow. Cahill allowed eight runsand seven hits in five-plus innings.

Indians activate Ambriz, option Smith

CLEVELAND (AP)—The Cleveland Indians activated right-hander Hector Ambriz(notes) fromthe 15-day disabled list Friday and optioned right-hander Joe Smith(notes) to Triple-AColumbus.
Ambriz was selected from the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 Draft inDecember. He had tendinitis in his right elbow during spring training and openedthe season on the DL.
The 25-year-old Ambriz made seven relief appearances on a rehab assignmentat Columbus and compiled a 1.13 ERA in eight innings, walking only one andstriking out 15.
Smith had an 0-1 record and 7.71 ERA in nine relief outings with Cleveland.He was acquired from the New York Mets in a trade in December 2008.
