Ricketts family takes ownership of Cubs

CHICAGO (AP)—Tom Ricketts met his wife at Wrigley Field and once lived acrossthe street from the fabled baseball park nestled in a neighborhood on Chicago’sNorth Side.

Now, he and his family own the stadium and the Chicago Cubs. Ricketts callsit a “dream job”—yet he knows managing a sports franchise is all business,too.

The family of billionaire Joe Ricketts, the founder of Omaha, Neb.-based TDAmeritrade, earlier this week closed a deal to buy a 95 percent controllinginterest in the baseball franchise, its storied ballpark and 25 percent ofComcast Sportsnet.

The price tag was steep: $845 million.

A-Rod still hitless in first Series

NEW YORK (AP)—Kate Hudson was talking to Kurt Russell when she suddenlystopped, leaned forward in a second-row box seat and clasped her hands together.

Moments later, she kicked back and shook her head. The mighty A-Rod hadstruck out—again.

A beast in the AL playoffs, Alex Rodriguez(notes) has become a bust in his firstWorld Series.

Totally out of whack, swinging at shadows, his performance at the plate inGame 2 Thursday night mirrored his output in the opener. So far: 0 for 8 withsix strikeouts.

“I’m not concerned,” the New York Yankees star said. “The fact that I’m0-fer in this Series and we’re 1-1 makes me feel good.”

Hudson sure didn’t seem to enjoy watching her boyfriend struggle against thePhiladelphia Phillies during the Yankees’ 3-1 win.

The actress grimaced when Rodriguez flailed at a changeup from PedroMartinez(notes) in the sixth inning—Rodriguez flipped his bat after his body bent outof shape chasing the pitch. She edged closer to a TV monitor to watch a replayafter he was called out on strikes in the eighth.

“I’ve missed some pitches, fouled some off,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez seemed ready to put all his October failures behind him afterhammering his way through the first two rounds, hitting a combined .438 withfive home runs and 12 RBIs against Minnesota and the Los Angeles Angels.

But after striking out three times in a game only twice all year, he’s doneit in each of the first two games against the Phils. Cliff Lee(notes) got him onWednesday night, then Martinez and Ryan Madson(notes) stopped him.

“I think they’re being careful,” Rodriguez said.

This isn’t a good sign for him, either: Cole Hamels(notes) is set to start Game 3for the Phillies on Saturday night. During the regular season, Hamels was theonly pitcher to fan Rodriguez three times in a game.

Hardly what anyone expected from the three-time MVP, a guy who waited 16years to get this far. Seldom-used Matt Stairs(notes) and Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes) each havea hit in this Series.

A-Rod, however, is A-Zero.

Russell, a former minor leaguer in the Angels’ organization and the longtimecompanion of Hudson’s mother, Goldie Hawn, cupped his hands together and shoutedencouragement to Rodriguez in the late innings. Didn’t work.

“I know he’ll bounce back,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “Obviouslyyou want him to continue on the torrid pace that he was on, but he’ll bounceback, and we’ll get it going with him in Philly.”

Mark Teixeira(notes) also was hitless in his Series debut until launching a tying,solo home run in the fourth inning. Rodriguez was up next and with the crowdrooting for the Yankees’ cleanup man to connect, he hit a routine fly ball.

“The first couple of series, Alex carried the entire offense, really,”Teixeira said. “He hasn’t gotten any hits, but I’m going to bet Alex is goingto be fine the rest of the Series. And if not, then hopefully me or a coupleother guys are going to step it up and do what we’ve done all season.”

Burnett gives Yankees confident outing

NEW YORK (AP)—A.J. Burnett(notes) hardly got any attention. He just got the win.

Almost an afterthought in his matchup with colorful star Pedro Martinez(notes),Burnett challenged Philadelphia right from the start Thursday night and gave theNew York Yankees the confident pitching performance they desperately needed.

Throwing first-pitch strikes to his first 11 batters, Burnett overpowered adangerous Phillies lineup and led New York to a 3-1 victory that tied the WorldSeries at one game apiece.

No longer will Burnett be considered the weak link in the Yankees’ rotationbetween CC Sabathia(notes) and Andy Pettitte(notes). The right-hander has his first win infour postseason starts—and this one was huge.

After losing with their ace, Sabathia, on the mound in Game 1, the Yankeesturned to Burnett in a crucial situation. That left plenty of fans nervous—Burnett can be erratic, and he lacks a playoff pedigree.

But boy, did he deliver.

The hard-throwing Burnett struck out nine—fanning slugger Ryan Howard(notes)three times—and walked only two in seven stellar innings. Outpitching a wilyMartinez, he allowed four hits, including Matt Stairs’(notes) run-scoring single withtwo outs in the second.

Burnett recovered quickly, striking out Pedro Feliz(notes), and was in charge therest of the way. After Carlos Ruiz’s(notes) fifth-inning double, he retired his finaleight batters and handed the lead directly to closer Mariano Rivera(notes) for asix-out save.

Exactly what the Yankees were looking for.

Burnett signed an $82.5 million, five-year contract with New York as a freeagent last winter and went 13-9 with a 4.04 ERA during the regular season,leading the AL with 97 walks. Normally quiet, he began a ritual of pastingteammates in the face with whipped cream pies after walk-off wins.

Fans fell in love with the playful tradition, but they were waiting forBurnett to come through on the mound in October.

Admittedly antsy before big games, Burnett had a chance to clinch the ALchampionship series in Game 5 last week, but he gave up four runs in the firstinning to Los Angeles. When the Yankees rallied to take the lead, Burnett failedto put away the Angels in the seventh. Pettitte finally ended the series in Game6.

This time, Burnett quieted the Phillies all night.

After saying on Wednesday that he looked forward to his matchup withMartinez, Burnett was in control the whole way. When he fanned Howard with abreaking ball in the third, stranding two runners, the pitcher pumped his fistas he walked off the mound.

Pedro comes up short against Yankees

NEW YORK (AP)—Pedro Martinez(notes) slowly walked off the mound, listening to thetaunts from the Bronx crowd. He looked skyward to acknowledge his late father,then smiled at the screaming fans.

Looking for one more big win in a spectacular career, Martinez couldn’t sendthe Philadelphia Phillies home with a commanding 2-0 lead over the New YorkYankees in the World Series.

Martinez allowed three runs and six hits in six-plus innings, striking outeight in a 3-1 loss in Game 2 Thursday night.

For 5 2-3 innings, vintage Pedro was on display—minus the overpoweringfastball of his heyday. Instead, he baffled the Yankees with offspeed pitchesand sneaky fastballs.

Martinez spent the first half of the year home in the Dominican Republic. Hesigned a one-year deal with the Phillies during the All-Star break for aprorated share of $2 million plus incentives, and went 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA innine starts down the stretch.

Yankees’ role players deliver in Game 2

NEW YORK (AP)—Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes) and a couple more of the New YorkYankees’ role players filled in the blanks when two of their biggest starsstruggled in Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night.

Hairston started a seventh-inning rally with a leadoff single and JoseMolina(notes) had a solid night behind the plate to help New York to a 3-1 victory overthe Philadelphia Phillies.

“It does feel good. Sometimes, you’ve got to scrap,” said Hairston, whoreplaced struggling Nick Swisher(notes) in right field. “I haven’t started too manygames the last two months or so.”

With Molina subbing for Jorge Posada(notes), A.J. Burnett(notes) threw seven sparklinginnings. Molina, who has caught each of Burnett’s postseason starts, also pickedoff Jayson Werth(notes) with a snap throw to first in the fourth.

“I thought that was real, real important,” manager Joe Girardi said ofMolina’s play on Werth.

The effort by New York’s bench players was especially crucial with DerekJeter(notes) and Alex Rodriguez(notes) both striking out three times.

There was more applause after the performance as Jay-Z and Keys walked armin arm through the outfield to the gate. Phillies pitcher Pedro Martinez(notes) waspreparing for his Game 2 start nearby but he kept long tossing as the musicstars disappeared from sight.

NOT AGAIN: There was another blown call by the postseason umpires in theseventh inning of New York’s 3-1 victory over the Phillies on Thursday night.

With one out and runners on first and second, Johnny Damon(notes) hit a smash toPhiladelphia first baseman Ryan Howard(notes). Umpire Brian Gorman, standing behind the6-foot-4 Howard, immediately threw his arm up to indicate the ball was caught inthe air, but TV replays indicated it bounced into Howard’s glove.

Howard took a few steps toward first before throwing to shortstop JimmyRollins(notes), who tagged Jorge Posada to complete the inning-ending double play.Posada stood on second for a few moments before bounding off the base to protestthe call, and manager Joe Girardi came out of the dugout to argue.

The umpires gathered in the infield after the players returned to theirdugouts, but the ruling stood.

A series of umpiring mistakes during the playoffs has led to calls forexpanded use of instant replay, but commissioner Bud Selig said before the gamehe still thinks it’s not necessary. Selig did promise more discussion of thetopic.

TOP SPOT: Ruben Amaro Jr. was one of Pat Gillick’s top lieutenants when thePhillies won the World Series last season.

This time, he’s in charge.

Amaro took over as general manager when Gillick retired following lastseason, ascending to the top spot after 10 years as an assistant inPhiladelphia. The club hasn’t skipped a beat under his leadership, winning theNL East and the pennant for the second consecutive year.

“What is really pretty cool about this being here right now is the factthat it’s the big stage, it’s New York,” Amaro said before Philadelphia’s 3-1loss in Game 2. “It’s the history and we’re playing clearly one of the bestteams in baseball, in our minds the best team in the American League.

“To be able to match up with this storied franchise and to be in thissituation is pretty gratifying. It’s pretty neat.”

Amaro made a couple of shrewd moves during the season to help the Philliesget to this point. He acquired left-hander Cliff Lee(notes) and outfielder BenFrancisco(notes) from the Cleveland Indians for four prospects and signed free-agentrighty Pedro Martinez.

Lee struck out 10 in a dominant performance in Philadelphia’s 6-1 victory inthe Series opener. Martinez went 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in nine starts in theregular season and pitched into the seventh inning in a sharp outing in Game 2.

Amaro, 44, joined the Phillies immediately after his playing career ended in1998. He worked under former GM Ed Wade for seven seasons and the last threewith Gillick.

“I’ve had a chance to learn from some very, very good GMs in my mind,”Amaro said. “They each had some pretty interesting qualities to kind of feedoff of.”

Selig welcomes McGwire’s return to MLB

NEW YORK (AP)—Bud Selig is happy Big Mac is back in baseball.

Mark McGwire was hired this week as hitting coach of the St. LouisCardinals, ending an exile for the former slugger who became notorious for hisrefusal to answer congressional questions about steroids use.

“Over the years I developed affection for players who I get to know andhave been good,” Selig said Thursday before Game 2 of the World Series.

McGwire hit a then-record 70 homers in 1998 and retired with 583 in 2001.Four years later at a congressional hearing on steroids, he repeatedly said hewasn’t there to talk about the past.

The Cardinals plan to hold a telephone news conference with McGwire afterthe World Series.

“When he comes back, you’ll all have a lot of opportunities to talk tohim,” Selig told reporters. “The fact that he’s coming back gives you anopportunity you wouldn’t have had.”

McGwire got under 25 percent support from voters in his three appearances onthe Hall of Fame ballot, well under the 75 percent needed, and some sayallegations of steroids use are a reason for his lack of support.

Selig has been in contact with team management about McGwire.

“I know how badly the Cardinals wanted to do it. I know that Tony La Russa,who has been talking to me about it, has been working with him. I know how closethey are,” Selig said. “I know much Bill DeWitt wanted to do it.”

Without being prompted, Selig defended baseball’s drug-testing program.

“I can only deal with the present and the future, and I could not be moreproud,” he said. “We administered 3,700 major league tests this year and hadtwo positives. That’s the story. We administered for the ninth straight year8,955 minor league tests, and we had seven-tenths of 1 percent positive.”

On another topic, Selig said his stance against expanding the use of replaysto aid umpires has not changed—but he did promise more discussions. A seriesof blown calls during the postseason has led to some calling for replay use toexpand beyond its current use, for whether potential home runs carried overfences or were fair or foul.

“I understand we had some incidents that were most unfortunate,” Seligsaid. “I think there are other ways we can make corrections. During theoffseason we’ll review everything. … I’m not afraid of change. but you have tobe very careful when you tamper with the sport.”

He also said he had spoken with Angels manager Mike Scioscia, who criticizedan offseason scheduled that had his team play eight games in the first 20 daysbecause of an increase in off-days that began in 2007 at the request ofbaseball’s broadcast partners. Selig said the unpredictability of the length ofpostseason series made planning complicated.

“How do you know in the middle of March if they’re going to go three games,four games, five games? How do you if you’re going to need an East Coast-WestCoast travel day?” he said. “People say you hate going into November? Yeah, ofcourse I do. Nobody worries about the weather more than I do.”

Selig refused to discuss the divorce proceedings between Dodgers owner FrankMcCourt and his wife, former Dodgers chief executive officer Jamie McCourt.Frank McCourt fired his wife last week, and Jamie McCourt claims she is aco-owner.

“That’s a matter between them,” Selig said.

Phils’ Martinez comes up short in Game 2

NEW YORK (AP)—Pedro Martinez(notes) slowly walked off the mound, listening to thetaunts from the Bronx crowd. He looked skyward to acknowledge his late father,then smiled at the screaming hecklers.

Looking for one more big win in a spectacular career, Martinez couldn’t sendthe Philadelphia Phillies home with a commanding 2-0 lead over the New YorkYankees in the World Series.

Martinez allowed three runs and six hits in six-plus innings, striking outeight in a 3-1 loss in Game 2 on Thursday night.

For 5 2-3 innings, vintage Pedro was on display—minus the overpoweringfastball of his heyday. He didn’t need it. Martinez baffled the Yankees withoffspeed pitches and sneaky fastballs. And, he did it despite not feeling well.

“I didn’t feel strong because I’ve been under the weather the last coupledays,” Martinez said. “It’s not an excuse. I felt good enough to make pitches.I felt kind of winded out there, but I was still able to do what I had to do.”

With two outs in the sixth, Martinez got burned on a 1-2 pitch. He threw aslow curve out of the strike zone that Hideki Matsui(notes) reached down and drove afew rows deep into the right-field seats to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. The320-foot homer—an out in most ballparks—was a deflating blow for Martinez.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner stayed in for the seventh afterconvincing manager Charlie Manuel he felt fine, despite nearing 100 pitches.Martinez gave up consecutive singles to Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes) and Melky Cabrera(notes)before calling it a night.

“He said he felt good. He said that he wanted to go back out and pitch,”Manuel said. “The bottom of the lineup was up and everything, and I thought hehadn’t lost anything.”

Manuel’s decision to start Martinez over Cole Hamels(notes), last year’s WorldSeries and NLCS MVP, in Game 2 was intensely scrutinized. But Hamels hasstruggled this postseason and Martinez threw seven scoreless innings in his onlystart at Los Angeles in the NLCS.

For Manuel, it was a no-brainer. Hamels pitches better at home, and Martinezhas plenty of experience pitching against the Yankees from his Boston Red Soxdays.

The familiar chants of “Who’s Your Daddy?” began once Martinez startedstretching in the outfield 30 minutes before game time. The reference was to aMartinez quote from 2004. Frustrated after another loss to New York, the pitchersaid: “I just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy.”

Making his first start at New York’s new billion-dollar ballpark, Martineznearly silenced the fans as he kept the Yankees’ sluggers off-balance.

“It’s a new Yankee Stadium, but the fans remain the fans,” Martinez said.“I remember one guy sitting right in the front row with his daughter in one armand a cup of beer in the other hand and saying all kinds of nasty stuff. I justtold him, ‘Your daughter is right beside you. It’s a little girl. It’s a shameyou’re saying all these things.’ I’m a father myself. How can you be so dumb todo those kind of things in front of your child? What kind of example are yousetting?”

Martinez struck out Derek Jeter(notes) and Johnny Damon(notes) to start the game andfanned Alex Rodriguez(notes) twice. Using his guile, the 38-year-old right-hander frozeJeter on a quick-pitch fastball in the third.

“Pedro’s probably the smartest pitcher I’ve faced since I’ve been up,”Jeter said. “He doesn’t have to throw 98-99 mph to be successful.”

Martinez made one mistake in the fourth, and Mark Teixeira(notes) didn’t miss it.Teixeira ripped a solo homer a long way out to right-center to tie the game at1.

“Pedro did a tremendous job,” Manuel said. “He changed speeds, and hedefinitely moved the ball around, and he was aggressive. He wasn’t afraid tothrow inside to some of their big hitters, and he pitched a good game. Pedro gothurt by the long ball off left-handed hitters. It was a very close game, and wecouldn’t pull it out.”

Martinez spent the first half of the year home in the Dominican Republic. Hesigned a one-year deal with the Phillies during the All-Star break for aprorated share of $2 million plus incentives, and went 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA innine starts down the stretch.

Martinez fell to 12-14 in 39 career games against the Yankees, counting thepostseason. He hadn’t faced New York in the playoffs since he pitched a shakyinning in Boston’s 10-3 victory in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS.

“The fans, I enjoy that,” Martinez said. “I know they really want to rootfor me. It’s just that I don’t play for the Yankees, that’s all. I’ve alwaysbeen a good competitor, and they love that. They love the fact that I compete.I’m a New Yorker, as well. If I was on the Yankees, I’d probably be like a kingover here.”

Series Breakdown

“Every game in the World Series is a must win,” Teixeira said. “Afteryesterday, getting a win today was big.”

A night after getting stopped by Cliff Lee(notes) in the opener 6-1, the Yanksbounced back from an early deficit and won in the Series for the first timesince taking a 2-1 lead against Florida in 2003.

After a day off, Game 3 will be at Philadelphia on Saturday night. ThePhillies had been hoping for more than a split but were content.

“I guess I’ll have to be,” manager Charlie Manuel said.

Light-hitting Matt Stairs(notes) put the Phillies on top with an RBI single in thesecond. Burnett then used a biting curveball to keep Philadelphia from advancinganother runner past second base against him.

Teixeira, in an 8-for-44 (.182) postseason slump, tied the score when he ledoff the fourth with a drive into the Yankees bullpen in right field. Matsui thenput New York ahead with two outs in the sixth, reaching down for a curveballbelow his knees and driving it a few rows into the seats in right.

Burnett got his first win following three postseason no-decisions for theYankees, allowing four hits in seven innings and retiring his last eightbatters. He struck out nine,—including Ryan Howard(notes) three times—and startedhis first 11 hitters with strikes, nine of them looking. Burnett kept hiscontrol, walking two, one of them intentional.

“The fact I was aggressive getting first-pitch strikes was huge,” Burnettsaid.

Mariano Rivera(notes) got six outs for his 38th postseason save, his 10th in WorldSeries play. After the Phillies put two on with one out in the eighth, Game 1star Chase Utley(notes) grounded into an inning-ending double play. He fanned Howardlooking starting the ninth—the Philadelphia slugger’s first four-strikeoutgame since July 21—then struck out Stairs with a runner at second to end it.

Philadelphia, seeking to become the NL’s first repeat Series champion sincethe 1975-76 Reds, lost for just the fifth time in 22 postseason games. ThePhillies managed three runs in 14 innings off two starters, CC Sabathia(notes) andBurnett.

New York won despite getting nothing from Alex Rodriguez(notes). After carrying theYankees in the playoffs against the Twins and Angels, he is 0 for 8 in his firstSeries appearance and struck out three times for the second straight night.

When the Series resumes, Cole Hamels(notes) starts Game 3 for the Phillies againstAndy Pettitte(notes) in an all-lefty matchup. Both teams will be making the tripthrough New Jersey by train.

Twenty-eight of the 53 teams that won Game 2 to tie the Series went on towin the title—but just one of the last six, the 2002 Angels.

There was another umpiring controversy. With two on and one out in theseventh, first base ump Brian Gorman ruled Howard reached down, caught JohnnyDamon’s(notes) liner and turned a double play. A slow-motion replay appeared to showthe first baseman gloved the ball on a short hop.

The always entertaining Martinez, pitching four days past his 38th birthday,was nearly as effective as the 32-year-old Burnett, fooling the Yankees withbreaking pitches of 70-75 mph. In his first Series start since winning Game 3for Boston five years ago, he allowed three runs and six hits in six-plusinnings, striking out eight and walking two.

There were a few muted chants of “Who’s Your Daddy?” but nothing like thebooming taunts that serenaded Martinez when he came to New York in his finalweeks with Boston in 2004. That was after he famously said, “I just tip my hatand call the Yankees my daddy” following a loss at Fenway Park.

“I knew it was going to be crazy,” Burnett said. “I knew he was going tobe on his game. I focus on myself, but you can’t help but watch his game. It’sthe funnest I’ve had on the field.”

After singles by Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes) and Melky Cabrera(notes) put runners at thecorners and no outs in the seventh, Martinez came out, pointing at the sky,tapping a fist on his heart and smiling at the crowd.

Jorge Posada(notes) pinch hit for Jose Molina(notes) and singled up the middle off Chan HoPark(notes) for a 3-1 lead.

Several moves by Yankees manager Joe Girardi paid off.

Molina made his fourth straight postseason start as Burnett’s personalcatcher and picked off Jayson Werth(notes) at first base after a leadoff single in thefourth—the Phillies next-to-last baserunner off Burnett.

Hairston made his first postseason start for the Yankees as the replacementfor Nick Swisher(notes), batting just .114 (4 for 35) in the postseason. Hairston, whohadn’t started in right field since July 21, had good numbers against Martinez(10 for 27) but had not faced him since 2004.

Philadelphia broke on top for the second straight game. Raul Ibanez(notes) bloopedan opposite-field double just on the left-field line with two outs in thesecond. Stairs, who took over at designated hitter when Ibanez shifted from DHto left in place of Ben Francisco(notes), followed with a one-hop single off the gloveof Rodriguez at third. A-Rod could have come up with the smash by Stairs, whohad been in a 4-for-51 (.078) slide dating to July 1.

Since June 25, Stairs’ only RBIs had been on a solo home run againstPittsburgh on July 11 and a grand slam at Washington on Sept. 10.

Ibanez made a diving catch on Robinson Cano(notes) with a runner at first in thesecond to prevent a possible RBI double.

NOTES: Derek Jeter(notes) was presented the Roberto Clemente Award, given annuallyto a player who combines community service with excellence on the field. …Utley walked in the second and has reached in a record 27 consecutive postseasongames since going 0 for 4 in his debut in 2007.

Jeter wins Roberto Clemente Award

NEW YORK (AP)—Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter(notes) has won the Roberto ClementeAward.

The Yankees captain was presented with the award Thursday before the startof Game 2 of the World Series between New York and the Philadelphia Phillies.The award is given annually to a major league player who combines communityservice with excellence on the field.

Jeter is being honored for his work with his Turn 2 Foundation, whichsupports programs that help young people recover from drug use to a healthierlifestyle. He hit .334 this season.

Clemente was a Hall of Fame right fielder with the Pittsburgh Pirates whodied in a plane crash on Dec. 31, 1972, while trying to deliver supplies toearthquake victims in Nicaragua. He finished his career with 3,000 hits.

Orioles decline $8M option on 3B Mora

BALTIMORE (AP)—The Orioles have declined their $8 million option on MelvinMora(notes), allowing Baltimore’s longest-tenured player to become eligible for freeagency.

Mora, 37, came to the Orioles in a 2000 trade with the New York Mets. Heplayed 1,256 games for Baltimore, including 807 at third base—the second-mostin franchise history behind Brooks Robinson.

Mora’s best season was 2004, when he hit .340 with 27 homers and 104 RBIs.He receives a $1 million buyout.

The Orioles also declined their $850,000 option on backup catcher ChadMoeller(notes).

The team also hired Jeff Datz as bench coach. Datz spent the past eightseasons on the Cleveland Indians’ staff, including four years as bench coach.
